Jul 05, 2017 A third view is to establish the primary bevel with the Tormek SG grinding wheel and then add a micro bevel using the Tormek SJ polishing wheel. In my opinion, establishing the two reference points with a hollow grind to allow alignment of the blade on a flat stone does not reflect Tormek

Apr 03, 2015 I ground one with the T7 and the other with the T4. I wanted to see the difference in the amount of hollow grind between the two Tormek grinding wheel sizes. The mathematical part of my brain tells me there is a difference. If I examine them very closely I think I can see a difference, the T4 grind having more hollow grind.
The result is a bevel edge with a completely flat surface, instead of a hollow grind. When sharpening on the side of the Diamond Wheels, we recommend using the Tormek Multi Base MB-100 with the appropriate jig developed for your specific tool. The combination of the Multi Base and jig gives you complete support and control when sharpening.

Jan 23, 2019 With things like chisels and plane irons, hollow grinding has a specific purpose, that being to make it easier and faster to hone the edge. Outside of that there is no reason that a hollow ground edge would perform better than a "flat ground" edge. ... The Tormek gouge jig can give this type of grind as well. There is a sliding collar that can ...
Oct 31, 2020 In fact, a 250mm full size SG-250, or any 250mm Tormek grinding wheel, will fit if the water trough is removed. I know this for two reasons: I swapped wheels, and, I measured the part of the shafts which hold the grinding wheel on my T8 and T4. ... Two contact point hollow grinding made a lot of sense. Yes, Ega, as you note, the advantage of ...
Feb 23, 2001 The amount of hollow grind imparted by the Tormek onto most of your blades is minimal. For a 5/64" blade sharpened at a 20 degree angle the amount of hollow is 0.0012". Having said that it would be quite substantial on a Mortise chisel. Use scary sharp for those. Steve
Mar 29, 2017 For many years I’ve hollow-ground my chisel and plane blades before honing the cutting edge with waterstones. I prefer a slow speed wet-grinder to create the hollow grind. I’ve used many different ones, but they all fall short of the Tormek T-8, which Tormek describes as a water-cooled sharpening system.
Step #1 - CBN wheel for grinding - to the edge of the blade. It is warmer than a Tormek, but cool enough to hold in the hand, and much much faster in the grind. The final hollow is slightly deeper (8"
Sep 13, 2021 A record of some observations after having an opportunity to use both tools. Tormek. Round grinding wheel leaves a radius or hollow grind. This is desirable for some applications like a parting tool. Does a great job on gouges. Hollow grind
May 18, 2007 You can hone quite a few times before the hollow is gone and grinding is necessary. Sharpening should not require spending big money. IMO it is sold as a black art that needs all manner
Despite what you may have read or been told, hollow grinding isn't a necessity; it's simply an unavoidable by-product of using a bench grinder. Luckily for you, you're decades beyond being stuck
Nov 11, 2020 Hollow grinding is just a way of keeping the honing surface to a minimum width and only needs doing occasionally. Edited November 9, 2020 by ... I hollow grind all my blades using a tormek grinder. I find it easier to sharpen and hone free hand with a hollow grind
Oct 31, 2002 This is a good point you made, I have been using the Tormek for my skews only because I have trouble holding the skew flat to the stone, the Tormek treatment works better than my own hand but I have always wonder about the hollow grind on the skew. As far as the other edge cutting tools, no problem with the Tormek.
Apr 21, 2016 Grinder vs Tormek. I have finally convinced myself I need a better option for rough shaping my tools and would like to start hollow grinding my chisels, planes and turning tools to make sharpening by hand faster. I was all ready to buy a grinder, two new wheels and the Tormek
Sep 04, 2016 To get a hollow edge on a grinding wheel you have to be using a VERY stable position on the stone. Any forward/back motion of the blade on the wheel will result in a convex instead of a hollow
Sharpening a true hollow ground knife with a sharpening stone will produce a more durable flat grind at the edge. If you are sharpening a kitchen knife with the indentations on the sides, we also recommend a sharpening stone or a good sharpening system. In short, if you just want to sharpen your knife that is hollow

This side sharpening results in a completely flat surface grind on the tool's edge, compared to the slight hollow grind from the wheel's circumference. We recommend the Tormek MB-100 Multi-Base for side grinding on the Diamond Wheels. It allows the individual Tormek tool jigs to be fully supported and in control when grinding

Mar 19, 2021 Hollow grinding for edge tools is nothing new (ever seen one of those old-timey hand-cranked bench grinders?), but it has recently become a bit of a trend in the greenwoodworking world, and for good reason. Let’s have a look at the terminology, available Jigs, as well as the practical advantages and

Jul 12, 2005 I do like scary-sharpening after putting on a hollow grind / concave bevel, but you don't need a $700 Tormek to get a good hollow grind - an old $20-30 hand-cranked grinding wheel from eBay will do a beautiful job, and like the Tormek, there's virtually no risk of burning the steel. Clay
Aug 19, 2021 I also sharpen my skews with hollow grind. Now I do it on CBN wheels but used to use older white silicone carbide and have tried belt sanders, disc sanders and the Tormek system. I do tend to hone my skews which does give them a slight flat grind of maybe 1mm because I place the hone on the toe and heel to keep the angle consistent.
Jan 25, 2013 This is done with the fine side of the Tormek grading stone. (About 400 grit.) The results are a nice hollow ground bevel. Hollow ground is probably better than adding a micro bevel. Hollow grinding makes the next steps easier and the tool seems to stay sharp longer. Tormek suggests going on to hone the tool on the leather wheel and honing ...

Aug 19, 2007 On thinner blades, like the hollow ground Sebenzas, I use a 15°/side grind and the edge is still very narrow, yet very sharp. One key to getting a great edge from the Tormek is getting a good dress on the wheel. I use the diamond dresser from Tormek and then take an old Lansky fine diamond hone and smooth the wheel some more.

Jul 03, 2021 Last year I moved from a T2000 to a T8. I bought a CBN 600 grit wheel for the T8 which really improved the performance and finish of the grind. Pair the Tormek with a good 2x72 and you will be able to handle most any sharpening job. I wish you good fortune with your venture.
The Tormek Multi Base allows the mounting of the Universal Support so that jigs can be used on the side of the Diamond Wheels. This allows sharpening to a flat surface, eliminating the slight hollow grind that results in using the edge of the wheel. The MB100 mounts in either the vertical or the horizontal position, and has an adjustment line ...
Sep 05, 2010 The Tormek, Sorby ProEdge, and Grizzly, can be used to sharpen many kinds of tools, not just turning tools. My experience with them has been only for turning tools. The wheel grinders (Tormek, Grizzly, slow speed) leave a hollow grind because of the curved grinding wheel. The Sorby ProEdge is an exception - it makes a flat grind.
